Why is my skin so dry? 5 ways to get hydrated.

It’s a beautiful day out - the sun’s shining and the birds are chirping. You go out to grab a coffee or tea (green tea please!) and you’re wearing your favourite outfit. Just as your take your first sip, you realize “ouch, my skin is really dry! Why does it feel like this?”.

Dry skin is a common problem for a lot of people. But don’t worry - discovering the root of the problem is half the battle! Lathering yourself with bunch of cream and lotion isn’t always the solution.

Here are 5 ways to stop dry skin that you might not know about:

Take cooler showers.

“But - I love my warm showers!” Yes, we all prefer warm showers, but hot water can do some major damage to your skin. Soaking yourself in warm water can actually wash away the natural oils that keep your skin moist and lubricated.

Shave smart

Depending on how you shave, these areas can get rather dry. Make sure to shave during or after a shower - this is when your skin is best suited for it due to the moisture it just received. And another key tip: always use sharp blades! Keep your strokes short and quick; long strokes can drag and burn the skin causing micro abrasions.

Invest in a humidifier

Regulate your indoor climate and buy a humidifier. This is especially important during the winter months when temperatures can plummet and our heaters are on high. This constant pump of our heaters causes a loss of humidity in the air, which in turn makes our skin prune up. And no one likes pruny skin :/

Reevaluate what you're putting on your skin

Be extra cautious about what you put on your skin. A lot of scented beauty products can further irritate your skin due to the chemicals and fragrances found in them. These chemicals don’t interact well with your skin’s natural oils and block your pores causing irritation and dryness. Even your go-to soap and deodorant can have nasty effects on your skin, so be sure to choose something mild, natural, and unscented!

Visit your doctor

Not to be a buzzkill...but ask your doctor! Dry skin can also be a symptom of numerous conditions ranging from psoriasis, eczema, hyperthyroidism, and even diabetes.

Remember, dry skin can be prevented (and reversed!) if you take these simple precautions :) Now go be beautiful, be confident, be you!
